Azaadi: Freedom is told live in original Urdu/English songs with backing music including ‘sitarist to the star’ Baluji Shrivastav OBE, supported by projected translations and art.
British Pakistani Samia writes, performs and produces bilingual Urdu and English songs based on the traditional Ghazal (a highly refined union of poetry with music) extending and subverting the form to explore contemporary issues around identity, race and gender. Samia is also a visual artist, mainly working in painting and video - her live shows are supported by translations and projections of her original visual art.
Samia has performed the show across the UK, creating a media buzz: extensive radio and print coverage included live performances on BBC Radio 3 and BBC Asian Network.
“Truly moving. Compelling and highly original”. – SONGLINE
