Snug and Grub Catch a Bug

Snug and Grub live safely underground in their earthy heap. One day they pop out from under a rock to see some googly eyes peering through the grass. What on earth is it? and who can catch it first? But beware, something is hovering in the blue sky ready to swoop down! A wonderfully wiggly adventure for all the family .

Join Garlic Theatre for a funny organic tale, with clowning and a host of colourful puppets, a beautifully crafted set and foot tapping music.

Programmed as part of the national Rekindle Libraries project funded by Arts Council England.

Teaching Primary Science through Creativity: Identifying and Classifying Nature

TEACHER LAB – FREE Online Teacher Training -  Teaching Primary Science through Creativity: Identifying and Classifying Nature

About Teacher Lab

The Teacher Lab project promotes creative practice in the classroom by supporting cross-curricular teacher and artist exchanges. It offers teachers direct access to a variety of artists, in order to re-imagine the curriculum and develop practice tools for learning through the arts. The Barbican first ran Teacher Lab in London, in 2019/20.

This Teacher Lab is a collaboration between Barbican Creative Learning, Creative Arts East and PEACH West Norfolk, and involves teachers Gill Sekatawa and Sarah Melia from Nelson Academy in Downham Market, and Norwich based artist Kaitlin Ferguson.

Through a series of planning, testing and reflection sessions, Gill, Sarah and Kaitlin have co-designed a range of creative activities to support the delivery of the primary science curriculum. These have been developed into a resource pack, in the form of a set of Powerpoint Slides which can be used directly in a lesson, with supportive guidance notes to assist teaching.

About the Resource

The resulting Teacher Lab Teaching Resource Pack supports both creative practice and scientific enquiry in the classroom, aiming to offer teachers access to a variety of art experiences, aligned to each year group’s science curriculum and specifically the scientific skills of ‘identifying and classifying’.

These activities introduce exciting ways to combine the deepening of scientific knowledge and skills with the development of creative practice. Each activity also aims to embed scientific understanding and help children to ‘know more and remember more’ about the chosen topic, each of which has been selected from the National Curriculum and/or the Early Learning Goals.

About the workshop

Gill and Kaitlin will demonstrate how arts practice can be used to reinforce the skills and processes of identifying and classifying. Participants will test out some of the activities first hand and be able to register for access to the final teaching resource on its release.

Who should attend?

Primary teachers and artist-educators working in primary education settings.

Please note: This is an online event. You will be sent a link out to the online Zoom session a few days before the event. Bookings must be made individually so please share this link with your colleagues to sign up directly for a place.

Please use the ‘Notes’ section in your booking to tell us what year group you teach, if possible. Thank you.

Fully Booked – FREE Online TeachMeet: Creativity at home

This event is now fully booked – Free Online TeachMeet: Creativity at home.

Creative Arts East and Barbican Guildhall Creative Learning are inviting primary teachers and arts educators in East Anglia to join us for an interactive session to share ideas for home learning activities which support primary age children to develop creative skills from home.

Be a part of the conversation, share your own experiences, and hear from fellow educators and artists.

This free online event will include fun and informal presentations, an opportunity to connect with other teachers and cultural practitioners, and two mini workshop sessions to get you inspired, delivered by poet, Lewis Buxton, and artist and animator, John Harmer. Content will largely focus on approaches suitable for years 3 – 6, but participation is open to any primary educator wishing to share and develop creative practise.

Once you’ve booked a ticket, you’ll be sent instructions by email on how to join the Zoom call in the week of the event.

We still have some slots available for presentations so do let us know if you’d like to register to present at the event. We’re looking for short, informal presentations that are three or seven minutes long and which are linked to the creation and delivery of remote creative learning activities for primary students. Think short, snappy and interactive starters which celebrate your practice! If you’d like to present, please email: sophie@creativeartseast.co.uk

This event is supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Barbican Guildhall Creative Learning and Creative Arts East on behalf of PEACH West Norfolk, a local cultural education partnership. Find out more about LECP’s here
