Nomadland
In 2011, Fern is a widow in her sixties, who loses her job after the closure of the US Gypsum plant in Empire, Nevada, so she decides to sell most of her belongings and leave her home and life in Nevada to embark on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling nomad.
Fern is invited to visit a desert rendezvous in Arizona which provides a support system and community for fellow nomads where she can learn basic survival and self-sufficiency skills for the road.
A number of real-life nomads appear as fictionalised versions of themselves.
